What Managing a School Means to me.
A school administrator is responsible for overseeing the
daily operations of a school. A
principal in particular is responsible for managing his or her site. It is necessary to allocate scarce resources
to students and staff. An effective
administrator is a able to first allocate resources to those programs that are
absolutely essential to students safety, well being and academic achievement.
It is imperative that school leaders allocate certain funds in accordance with
federal and state laws, such as title 1 money, and building site sinking
fund. Often administrators are faced
with dilemmas when having to provide teachers, coaches and support staff with
resources. It is important to maintain
an objective non-bias process for the soliciting and allocation of funds and
other non-monetary resources whenever warranted. School administrators are also required by
law to conduct school wide drills, practice due process, and follow many other
judicial procedures when handling documents and other non academic students
records.
The overall management of a school’s social and academic programs is a task often shared with staff and outside organizations such as North Central Accreditation, which is now a part of AdvancED™. Getting an outside perspective of a school gives an administrator a non bias look at the over all functionality of a school. I was fortunate to have served on a QAR team under the guidance of Cora Christmas, Principal of Henry Ford Academy. Our team consisted of three teachers, a counselor,a high school prinicipal and a MI department of education employee. Together we evaluated Davis Aerospace High School, which is a DPS school that integrates vocational education with an academic curriculum. At this school students get a diploma, one vocational education certificate for working on airplanes, and possibly even a private pilot’s license.
This experience gave me a hands on and in depth view of the quality assurance revew process. Davis Aerospace was a shining example of how focus and committment can transform a school to greatness. I am confident that this experience has given me the knowledge and skills necesary to oversee a quality assurance review
